Strawberry Basil Margarita - A Fresh, Bright Twist on a Classic

Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes
Servings: 2 servings

Ingredients

  • 6–7 medium fresh strawberries, hulled
  • 6–8 fresh basil leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • 2 ounces tequila (blanco for bright, reposado for smoother)
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice (about 1 large lime)
  • 1/2–3/4 ounce agave nectar (to taste)
  • 1/2 ounce orange liqueur (Cointreau or triple sec), optional but recommended
  • Ice
  • Pinch of sea salt (optional, for muddling)
  • Salt or sugar for the rim (optional)
  • Lime wheel and sliced strawberry, for garnish

Method

  1. Prep the glass: If you like a rim, run a lime wedge around your glass and dip in salt or sugar. Set aside.
  2. Muddle the base: In a shaker, add strawberries, basil, and a tiny pinch of salt. Gently muddle until the berries are juicy and the basil is fragrant. Don’t shred the basil to bits—just bruise it.
  3. Add liquids: Pour in tequila, lime juice, agave, and orange liqueur if using. Fill the shaker with ice.
  4. Shake hard: Shake for 10–15 seconds until well chilled. The shaker should feel frosty.
  5. Strain and serve: Fill your prepared glass with fresh ice. Fine-strain the cocktail over the ice to catch seeds and basil bits.
  6. Garnish: Add a basil sprig, lime wheel, and a strawberry slice. Serve immediately.
