Gin Basil Smash Cocktail Recipe – Fresh & Easy Summer Drink

Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings: 1 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 oz gin (a classic London Dry or a citrus-forward gin works best)
  • 3/4 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2–3/4 oz simple syrup (adjust to taste; 1:1 sugar to water)
  • 8–12 fresh basil leaves (plus a small sprig for garnish)
  • Ice (for shaking and serving)
  • Optional: a pinch of salt to boost the basil flavor

Method

  1. Prep your basil: Gently slap the basil leaves between your palms to release aroma. Add them to your shaker.
  2. Muddle lightly: Add simple syrup to the shaker and muddle the basil gently. Aim to bruise, not shred, to avoid bitterness.
  3. Add liquids: Pour in the gin and lemon juice. Add a small pinch of salt if using.
  4. Shake hard: Fill the shaker with ice and shake for 12–15 seconds until well-chilled and bright green.
  5. Strain: Double strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice to catch basil bits.
  6. Garnish and serve: Add a basil sprig. Give it a quick slap before placing it on top to wake up the aroma.
