Prep your basil: Gently slap the basil leaves between your palms to release aroma. Add them to your shaker.
Muddle lightly: Add simple syrup to the shaker and muddle the basil gently.
Aim to bruise, not shred, to avoid bitterness.
Add liquids: Pour in the gin and lemon juice. Add a small pinch of salt if using.
Shake hard: Fill the shaker with ice and shake for 12–15 seconds until well-chilled and bright green.
Strain: Double strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice to catch basil bits.
Garnish and serve: Add a basil sprig. Give it a quick slap before placing it on top to wake up the aroma.
